My wife Ana and I started our 1st business in 2004, right at the foot of the bridge, in Moore Haven, Florida, called Tico's Spanish Cuisine. It was a hot spot for the deputies of Glades County, especially Captain Jeff Hill. He frequented our little restaurant and had approached me several times about working for the Glades County Sheriff's Office. During one of his visits, he stated that I was very personable with a great work ethic and that's what's needed in law enforcement. He explained how he watched me interact with the community and that I could help bridge the gap, if I gave it a chance. I spoke with my wife and the rest is history.
My first post was a civilian post as a booking clerk. In Booking, I oversaw accurately inputting a person and their charges based off their arrest, into the system. We supplied further explanation of the arrest, to the person that was taken into custody based on the deputies' arrest report. Here, we took their photos and fingerprints and assigned them to their pod based off their classifications.
Once in the new facility off of SR 78 E, I made myself available where needed. I was afforded the opportunity to work several areas of the Glades County Detention Center.
In Classifications, I oversaw ensuring that all Inmates/Detainees were at their proper custody levels. This ranged from County inmates, U.S Marshall inmates, and ICE (Immigration) detainees. Classifications prevented high risk inmates from being amongst the general population, ensured rival gang member separation, and always ensured that the above-mentioned levels of custody remained separated.
At one point I was assigned to the front desk where I performed all check-ins to the facility, conducted regular security checks of buildings and grounds, completed all vendor check-ins for proper identification, and monitored all visitations. This all aided in preventing possible entry of contraband into the facility.
Working Recreation, I was tasked with security while Inmates/Detainees were allowed their proper outside time without any physical altercations. This also prevented any potential escapes from custody.
While working transportation, we ensured that all Inmates/Detainees made it to their court dates, doctors' appointments, and proper facility transfers all on time safely and securely.
Being in the Control Room, I was tasked with Inmate/Detainee monitoring. I kept an accurate and updated log of all movement in and out of the pods as well as random inmate count to ensure all Inmates/Detainees were always accounted for. This also helped in preventing any potential facility escapes.
While being stationed in Confinement, I was tasked with close monitoring of Inmates/Detainees considered to be high risk or a danger to someone or themselves.
While working the maintenance department I oversaw all building and grounds maintenance to include repairing any foundation cracks, pipe damage, electrical shortages, and sewage issues. We were also tasked with landscaping of the facility grounds. This all ensured the facility would pass the yearly inspection with excellence and supplied a great reflection of your hard-earned tax dollars.
I was a member of C.E.R.T (Certified Emergency Response Team). Being a part of this team meant that I had to attend regular training and physical agility tests. These trainings and physical agility test all had to be passed to remain an active member of the team. Being a part of this team also meant that we were the first in for any hostile situations that arose. These types of situations included physical altercations and attempted riots.
I was later promoted to Corrections Sergeant where I was tasked with supervising a mixed team of 18, that included Civilian employees and Correctional Officers. Here, I ensured that the safety and professionalism of my team was a top priority and that all policies and procedures were being followed.
I later completed the cross over training and transferred over to Road Patrol where I was a Deputy Sheriff for the Glades County Sheriff's Office.
Being in this position, I was tasked with many things like traffic control, warrant executions, welfare checks, domestic disturbances, business checks, watch orders, civil process, civil standbys, etc...
I’ve been able to meet so many great people while patrolling the neighborhoods in my assigned zones and I grew a love for the community I was tasked with serving.
I have always been able to count on them for any information I needed and because of this I was able to solve a number of my cases prior to handing them over to detectives.
While assigned to road patrol, I made it my personal duty to introduce all new hires to school and county officials as well as business owners. This allowed them to become acquainted with the new deputy. Do you know who your deputies are?
